Healthcare Clerk Jobs in New Mexico
A Healthcare Clerk, also known as a Health Information Clerk, contributes to health care administration by managing and organizing medical records and other health information data. Their primary responsibilities include maintaining patient records, retrieving and disseminating medical information within the healthcare facility, and ensuring data accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper and electronic systems. They are key in the accurate and confidential handling of patient records, coding and categorizing patient information for insurance reimbursement purposes, database management, and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements.
Healthcare Clerks should have strong organizational, technical, and communication skills. They must be detail-oriented and have the ability to handle confidential information with integrity. Since they often use Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems, computer proficiency is essential. While a high school diploma or equivalent is generally required, many employers prefer candidates with postsecondary certificates or associate's degrees in health information management or a related field. Certification, such as the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential, may also be beneficial. Before becoming a Healthcare Clerk, a person may have roles such as Medical Receptionist, Administrative Assistant, or Medical Records Technician.
